MSME Registration (Udyam): Benefits, Process & Complete Guide 2026
Everything you need to know about MSME Udyam registration in India — eligibility criteria, classification, step-by-step registration process, and the full range of benefits available to registered MSMEs.
MSME Registration (Udyam): Benefits, Process & Complete Guide 2026
India's Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) form the backbone of the economy — contributing over 30% of GDP, 45% of exports, and employing more than 110 million people. If your business falls within the MSME classification, registering on the Udyam portal is one of the most impactful compliance steps you can take.
Udyam registration is free, paperless, and based on self-declaration — yet it unlocks a substantial range of financial, regulatory, and commercial benefits that can meaningfully reduce your cost of doing business.
What Is Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration (formerly known as Udyog Aadhaar) is the official government registration for MSMEs under the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar Memorandum (UAM) system from 1st July 2020.
Upon successful registration, the enterprise receives a Udyam Registration Certificate with a unique Udyam Registration Number (URN) — a permanent identifier that does not require renewal.
MSME Classification Criteria (Revised 2020)
The MSME classification was revised in 2020 to use a composite criterion of investment in plant & machinery/equipment AND annual turnover:
| Category | Investment in Plant & Machinery/Equipment | Annual Turnover |
|---|---|---|
| Micro Enterprise | Up to ₹1 crore | Up to ₹5 crore |
| Small Enterprise | Up to ₹10 crore | Up to ₹50 crore |
| Medium Enterprise | Up to ₹50 crore | Up to ₹250 crore |
Key points:
- Both criteria must be satisfied simultaneously — if either exceeds the limit, the enterprise moves to the next category
- Investment is calculated at original cost (excluding land and building for manufacturing enterprises)
- Turnover is as per the Income Tax Act / GST returns
- Retail and wholesale trade enterprises are now eligible for Udyam registration (limited to micro and small categories)
Who Can Register?
Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing, production, processing, preservation of goods, or providing services can register as an MSME. This includes:
- Proprietorships
- Partnership firms
- Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs)
- Companies (Private Limited, Public Limited, OPC)
- LLPs
- Co-operative societies
- Trusts
Retail and wholesale traders can also register, though they are eligible for only select benefits (priority sector lending and delayed payment protection, but not government procurement reservations).
Step-by-Step Udyam Registration Process
Udyam registration is entirely online and free of cost at udyamregistration.gov.in.
Step 1: Visit the Udyam Registration Portal
Go to the official portal. There are two registration options:
- For new entrepreneurs (not previously registered as UAM): Use "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME or those with EM-II"
- For those with existing UAM registration: Use the migration option
Step 2: Enter Aadhaar Details
The registration is Aadhaar-based:
- For proprietorships: Aadhaar of the proprietor
- For partnerships: Aadhaar of the managing partner
- For companies/LLPs: Aadhaar of the authorised signatory (director/designated partner)
Enter the Aadhaar number and validate with OTP sent to the registered mobile number.
Step 3: PAN Verification
Enter the PAN of the enterprise (or proprietor for proprietorships). The system automatically fetches ITR data and GST data linked to the PAN for verification of investment and turnover figures.
Step 4: Fill Enterprise Details
Provide:
- Name and type of organisation
- Location and address of the enterprise
- Date of commencement of business
- Bank account details (account number and IFSC)
- Major activity (manufacturing or services)
- NIC (National Industrial Classification) code for your activity
- Number of employees
- Investment in plant & machinery/equipment
- Annual turnover
Step 5: Submit and Receive Certificate
After submission, the Udyam Registration Certificate is generated immediately with the unique Udyam Registration Number. The certificate can be downloaded from the portal at any time.
No physical documents need to be uploaded — the entire process is based on self-declaration and Aadhaar/PAN verification.
Benefits of Udyam Registration
1. Priority Sector Lending and Collateral-Free Loans
Banks are mandated to lend a specified percentage of their net credit to the priority sector, which includes MSMEs. Registered MSMEs benefit from:
- Priority sector classification: Easier access to bank credit
- CGTMSE scheme: Collateral-free loans up to ₹2 crore under the Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises
- Lower interest rates: Many banks offer preferential rates to Udyam-registered enterprises
- Emergency Credit Line Guarantee Scheme (ECLGS): Government-backed emergency credit during economic disruptions
2. Protection Against Delayed Payments (MSMED Act, Section 15-23)
This is one of the most powerful protections for MSMEs. Under the MSMED Act:
- Buyers must pay MSMEs within 45 days of acceptance of goods/services (or within the agreed period, which cannot exceed 45 days)
- If payment is delayed, the buyer must pay compound interest at 3 times the RBI bank rate on the outstanding amount
- MSMEs can file complaints with the MSME Samadhaan portal for delayed payment recovery
- Buyers who fail to pay within 45 days cannot claim the payment as a deductible expense for income tax purposes
This protection is only available to Udyam-registered enterprises — unregistered MSMEs cannot invoke these provisions.
3. Government Procurement Reservations
The Public Procurement Policy for MSEs mandates that:
- 25% of annual procurement by Central Government Ministries and CPSEs must be from MSEs
- Of this 25%, 4% must be from SC/ST-owned enterprises and 3% from women-owned enterprises
- 358 items are reserved exclusively for purchase from MSEs — large companies cannot bid for these tenders
Udyam registration is mandatory to participate in government tenders under these reserved categories.
4. Subsidies on Patent and Trademark Registration
Udyam-registered MSMEs receive significant subsidies:
- 50% subsidy on patent registration fees — reducing the cost from ₹8,000–₹16,000 to ₹4,000–₹8,000 for micro enterprises
- 50% subsidy on trademark registration fees — reducing the fee from ₹9,000 to ₹4,500
5. ISO Certification Reimbursement
MSMEs can claim reimbursement of ISO certification expenses from the government. The scheme covers ISO 9001 (quality management), ISO 14001 (environmental management), and other relevant standards.
6. Electricity Bill Concessions
Many state governments offer concessions on electricity tariffs for Udyam-registered MSMEs. The specific benefit varies by state — Maharashtra, for instance, offers tariff concessions for registered small industries.
7. Exemption from Certain Direct Tax Laws
Certain provisions of the Income Tax Act provide relief to MSMEs:
- Presumptive taxation under Section 44AD (for businesses with turnover up to ₹3 crore) and Section 44ADA (for professionals with receipts up to ₹75 lakh) — reducing compliance burden
- Deduction under Section 80-IC for MSMEs in specified backward areas
8. Access to Government Schemes and Subsidies
Udyam registration is the gateway to numerous Central and State Government schemes:
- PM Vishwakarma Scheme: Support for traditional artisans and craftspeople
- PMEGP (Prime Minister's Employment Generation Programme): Subsidy of 15–35% on project cost for new enterprises
- Technology Upgradation Fund Scheme (TUFS): Subsidised credit for technology upgradation in textiles
- ZED (Zero Defect Zero Effect) Certification: Quality and sustainability certification with government support
- Startup India: Overlapping benefits for startups that also qualify as MSMEs
9. Reduced Court Fees in Disputes
In certain states, Udyam-registered MSMEs pay reduced court fees when filing cases related to business disputes — reducing the cost of legal recourse.
Updating and Amending Udyam Registration
If your enterprise's investment or turnover changes and it moves to a different MSME category, you must update your Udyam registration. The update is done online on the Udyam portal using the same Aadhaar and PAN credentials.
Important: If your turnover or investment exceeds the Medium Enterprise threshold (₹250 crore turnover or ₹50 crore investment), your enterprise will no longer qualify as an MSME and the registration will be cancelled.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
1. Registering on unofficial portals Udyam registration is free on the official government portal. Several unofficial websites charge fees for the same service. Always use udyamregistration.gov.in.
2. Incorrect NIC code The National Industrial Classification (NIC) code must accurately reflect your primary business activity. An incorrect NIC code can affect your eligibility for sector-specific schemes.
3. Not updating after turnover/investment changes Failure to update your registration when your enterprise grows beyond a category threshold can result in ineligible claims for MSME benefits — which may be recoverable with penalties.
4. Confusing Udyam with GST registration Udyam registration and GST registration are separate. Udyam registration does not substitute for GST registration, and vice versa.
